Road Safety

Heading BackgroundTraffic Education for School Children

Primary Schools

Throughout the school year the Road Safety Team aims to visit every primary school on the Island to improve the children's traffic awareness. This may be in the form of talks, walks or workshops.

We believe that the more practical the activity the more children will get out of the training, whether that be through role-play for infants or practical activities like speed assessment for junior children where they can have a go at predicting speed and recording speed of traffic with the Radar Gun.

Junior Road Safety Officers' Scheme

The Junior Road Safety Officers' Scheme gives pupils the opportunity to be responsible for the Road Safety information that is given to their school. Junior Road Safety Officers are expected to display posters and newsletters sent to them by the Road Safety Team, and to organise assemblies, competitions and general road safety information.

The children who are part of the Junior Road Safety Officers scheme are usually in the final year of primary school (Year Six), or the last year of infant school (Year Two) if the school is for Key Stage One children.

This website has a section devoted to the Junior Road Safety Officers to make it easier to contact each other and the Road Safety Team. Also on this area of the website there are links to other great Road Safety sites for everyone, including Road Safety games and further information.

Secondary Schools

Pre Driver Training

Pre Driver Training sessions are delivered to year 11 secondary school pupils. They are carried out in partnership with Road Safety and Senior Driving Examiner. These sessions cover all aspects of driving from documentation, theory and practical tests, attitude and behaviour, risks and consequences, road traffic accidents, drinking and driving, fatigue, seat belts, speed etc.

School Bus Travel

The Road Safety Team runs a School Bus Travel session for Secondary School aged pupils to encourage safe behaviour on the school bus, and for the pupils to think about the consequences of their actions and the risks they take.

To find out more about the traffic education service contact the Road Safety Team on Telephone No. 01624 686671.
